As creative professionals, our employment, both career and survival, is often temporary and
freelance. Our lives are fragmented and those individual fragments are not necessarily joined
together in any cohesive connection. Picture a body with arms, legs, torso, head, neck, etc,
all trying to function separately from each other! Not a pretty picture. The Bible says Jesus
is the vine and we are the branches. If the branches are not connected to the vine, then they
can't grow and flourish. Likewise, if our lives are so separated into different functions that
don't make sense as a whole unit, a whole person, then we are torn from one activity and
relationship to the next, without prioritizing their purposes and connecting them with each
other. How much of life's stresses can I handle, and how much is too much?
We have our work, possibly several different kinds of jobs at the same time, & other activities,
each fragment of our lives with it's own agenda. We have our family, friends, unions, charities, acquaintances, business associates, recreational associates, exercise routine, publicity
(desired and not), fans, people on the street and in the stores, household responsibilities, etc.
Each of these require our time and attention, but when, where, how?
Should we focus on one, at the exclusion of all the others, to pursue a prize? Should we spend
equal amounts of time and energy on each part of our lives, thereby maybe not accomplishing
anything great with any of these activities? What obstacles get in the way of living our lives
to our fullest capabilities and desires? What is best for our family? What is best for us,
individually? Are we just serving ourselves, or are we an integral part of our community and
the global picture? Where do I fit in? How does my faith become the foundation for all I do?
